WATERLOO - Rev. Dr. Marvin John Schumacher, 80, of rural Waterloo, died Wednesday, Dec. 21, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.

He was born Nov. 27, 1931, in Tappen, N.D., son of Jacob and Eva Docktor Schumacher. He married Janice D. Neal in 1951 in Waverly.

He graduated from Wartburg College in Waverly and from Wartburg Seminary in Dubuque. The Rev. Schumacher was a pastor for three parishes in North Dakota, elected Bishop of ELCA for Western North Dakota Synod and served churches in Grand Rapids, Mich., before retiring in 1992 and moving to Iowa. He then served as interim pastor for St Paul's Lutheran Church in Waverly.

Survived by his wife; three sons, Paul (Jill) of Colechester, Vt., Tim (Mary) of Estherville and Mark (Sherry) of Waterloo; two daughters, Rosita (Steve) Tendall of Davenport and Suzanne (Paul) Torkelson of Waverly; an exchange student daughter, Gisela (Italo de Nubilla) Penalosa of Barranquilla, Columbia; a sister, Emma Werre of Napoleon, N.D.; a sister-in-law, Martha Schumacher of Wishek, N.D.; 13 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Preceded in death by five brothers, Christ, Adam, Benjamin, Jacob and Henry; and five sisters, Leah Mertz, Rose Rau, Magdalena Reuer, Mary Schmidt and Lydia Gaasland.

Family directed memorial service: 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. John's Lutheran Church, Bennington Township. Public visitation from 9 a.m. until service time Monday at the church. Garden View Chapel Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be directed to the missions of the church.

He was a boy scout leader and also enjoyed flying.
