Passes To Rest At Ripe Old Age

Mrs. Ann E. Cobb, Aged 87, Died This Morning

Came to Iowa With Husband in Year 1856.

A long and useful life came to a close when Mrs. Ann E. Cobb passed away this morning at 6:30 at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Robilla Pendleton, 1721 Third avenue west, following a general breakdown covering a period of the past year, brought on by the infirmities of age.

Despite her great age, deceased had been quite active up until recently, when she began to fail. Nineteen weeks ago she was forced to take to bed and has been there since, constantly under the care of a trained nurse. When first stricken the attending physician thought she could not live more than a few days but her great vitality sustained her until today. Throughout it all she suffered but little and quietly passed away without the least pain. Yesterday she had the rallying spell that is usual just preceding death but last night she rapidly became weaker and talked deliriously all during the night. She passed away without regaining consciousness sufficiently to recognize relatives.

Deceased was born in Victory, N. Y., on December 16, 1826, and was therefore in her 88th year. Her maiden name was Ann E. Linginfelter. On March 5, 1848, at the age of 22 years, she was united in marriage to William S. Cobb and tomorrow would have been the anniversary of their wedding. They came to this city in the fall of 1856 and settled on a farm southeast of the city in Cedar township. There they resided for nine years, when they removed to the city to take up residence. The late Mr. Cobb, who died nine years ago, will be well remembered by the older residents as having for a number of years been engaged in the livery and bus business. He later disposed of that business and lived a retired life the remainder of his days.

At his death, the widow took up her residence with the daughter. Besides her, deceased is survived by a son, E. S. Cobb, who conducts a grocery at the corner of Tenth and Jefferson streets, seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. One grandson, H. E. Cobb, of Marshalltown, arrived in the city this afternoon. The funeral arrangements will not be made until another grandson, Claude Cobb, of Estherville, is heard from. He was informed of the death by message this morning.
