WATERLOO - Gwendolyn Darlene Poyner, 86, of Oakland, Calif., formerly of Waterloo, died Saturday, Oct. 29, 2011, at Lake Park Retirement Residence, Oakland, after a courageous battle with cancer.

She was born Oct. 10, 1925, in Waterloo, the middle daughter of Alma and Vincel "Jack" Philp. She married her husband of 66 years, Robert Richard "Dick" Poyner, just before he joined the Army and was shipped overseas to Germany during World War II.

Gwen grew up on a small farm in Iowa with her two sisters, Dorothy and Elaine, and graduated from Gates College. She was a member of The United Methodist Church of Hudson.

She is survived by her husband, Dick Poyner of Oakland; their four children, Doug Poyner of Portland, Ore., John Poyner of Colusa, Calif., Patricia Poyner of Sacramento, Calif., and DeAnn Poyner of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho; 10 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and her sister, Dorothy L. Wheeler of Waterloo.

The family asks that memorial contributions be sent to the American Cancer Society in Gwen's name so that other cancer patients may benefit from her life; American Cancer Society.
