WATERLOO - Eldred J. Harman, 90, of Waterloo, formerly of Perry, died Friday, Sept. 30, at Lakeview Landing of Friendship Village of complications of Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases.

He was born March 26, 1921, in Plymouth, son of Walter and Vera Hodson Harman. He married Donna L. Wheeler June 24, 1950, at First Presbyterian Church in Waterloo.

He graduated from Plymouth High School, and received a bachelor's degree in animal husbandry from Iowa State University in 1947.

Mr. Harman began working for Rath Packing in 1947 as a hog buyer, and helped establish the Iowa Pork Co. in Perry in 1962, which later became IBP. He began working for Home Federal Savings and Loan in Perry in 1967, and was president before retiring in 1983 after its merger with American Federal Savings and Loan of Des Moines.

Mr. Harman served in the U.S. Army during World War II in France and Germany and guarded POW's in Algona. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Waterloo, Kiwanis Clubs in Perry and Waterloo, past president of Dallas Co. Hospital Board in Perry, served on the national board for Pi Kappa Phi, and many other philanthropic activities.

Survived by his wife; a son, James R. of Johnston; a daughter, Jayne (David) Hintz of Lowden; two grandchildren, Aaron James Hintz and Sarah Ann Harman; a brother, Don (Nadine) of Marshalltown; two sisters-in-law, Elaine Harman of Mason City and Cory Harman of LeMars; and many nieces and nephews.

Preceded in death by two brothers, Keith and Rayh Harman.

Celebration of life: 11 a.m. Tuesday First Presbyterian Church, with burial in Memorial Park Cemetery. Public visitation from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at Locke Funeral Home.

Memorials may be directed to the church or Eldred Harman Scholarship Fund through Iowa State University Foundation.
