Leola M. Hickman, age 89, of Waterloo, went to be with the Lord on Monday, September 29, 2008 at her home.

She was born May 23, 1919 on a farm near Fairbank, Iowa, the daughter of Walter and Bessie (Carpenter) Ohl. Leola was united in marriage to her lifelong sweetheart, Harold “Hick” Hickman on October 11, 1937 in Waterloo. They shared a loving marriage of 58 years and they were blessed with a son and a daughter. Harold preceded her in death on July 5, 1995.

Leola attended local schools and was a lifelong member of Hagerman Baptist Church. She worked at Robert Drug and Hummel’s restaurant in Waterloo. Following retirement, she and Harold enjoyed working at Turf Paradise Race Track in Phoenix where they enjoyed meeting several celebrities.

Survivors include a son, Verne (Sandra) Hickman of Waterloo and Las Vegas, NV; a daughter, Sherry Hickman of Waterloo; four grandchildren, William (Julie) Blanford, Susan (Rodney) Blanford, all of Waterloo, Shelbi (Les) Hickman of Readlyn, and Todd Hickman of Phoenix, AZ; five great grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; a brother, Howard Ohl of Port Orchard, WA; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her stepfather; her husband; a grandson, Michael Blanford; a brother, Charles Ohl; and a sister Bonnie Maledy.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Friday, October 3, 2008 at Hagerman Baptist Church in Waterloo, with burial in the Garden of Memories Cemetery. Friends may call from 5:00-8:00 P.M. Thursday at the Kearns, Huisman-Schumacher Chapel on Kimball in Waterloo and after 10:00 A.M. Friday at the church.
