CEDAR FALLS - Roger C. Durant, 91, of Cedar Falls, died Thursday, Sept. 8, at the Western Home Communities, Cedar Falls.

He was born Feb. 15, 1920, in Long Beach, Calif., son of Deserie C. and Esther E. Benoit Durant. He married Rhoda "Ronnie" M. DeHaven April 15, 1950, in Bethesda, Md.

He served at Independent Medical Duty aboard USS SC 1045 and USS DD 693. He was attached to the Fleet Hospital Guadalcanal, Pacific Acorn Units, Epidemic Disease Control Unit at Pearl Harbor, the Naval Medical Research Units at Cairo, Egypt, Bethesda, Md., and the Institute of Tropical Medicine at Guam. Mr. Durant graduated from college in California, and was a 20-year Naval Veteran, followed by 12 additional years of Civil Service at the Naval Medical Research Institute in Bethesda. His research produced co-authorship of 60 major scientific publications. He was a Life Member of the DAV, and served seven years as a volunteer at Waterloo VA Clinic. The couple have resided in Maryland, Egypt, Hawaii, Florida and Iowa. After 32 years of combined Federal Service, the couple retired to Florida and later moved to Iowa.

Survived by his wife; two sons, Richard (Marilyn) of Glenwood, Md., and Douglas (Mary) of Waterloo; five grandchildren, Dr. Melissa Durant (Mark) Cunningham, Kevin Durant, Dr. Laura (Ben) Elliott, Kyle (Ashleigh) Durant and Michelle Durant; and three in-laws, Richard (Ethel) DeHaven of Bethesda, Evelyn Thompson of Silver Spring, Md., and Lucille Phillips of Tigard, Ore.

Memorial services: 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 11, at Western Home Chapel, with burial in Fairview Cemetery, both in Cedar Falls. Military Rites by the Cedar Falls AMVET Post 49. Public visitation after the service Oct. 11 in East Solarium at the Western Home. Locke Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be directed to Western Home Foundation or Walnut Ridge Baptist Church, Waterloo.
