WATERLOO - Ray Everett Heerkes, 88, of Waterloo, formerly of Jesup and Hazleton, died Wednesday, Sept. 7, at Ravenwood Nursing and Rehab Center.

He was born March 18, 1923, in Franklin County, son of Elward George and Zelda Alzada Latimer Heerkes. He married Alyce C. Quinlan Schumann on Oct. 29, 1946, in Boone. She died Nov. 3, 1983. He married Louise Emma Alton Volbruck on Jan. 26, 1990, at St. Athanasius Catholic Church, Jesup.

Mr. Heerkes served in the U.S. Army Air Corps as a radio operator. He worked as a mechanic at Ace Fogdall RV, Cedar Falls, before retirement. He also had worked at Hawkeye Steel and Herrick Refrigeration. He was a member of St. Athanasius Catholic Church, Jesup.

Survived by his wife; two daughters, Patricia (Kenneth P.) Weber of Jesup and Rae Ann (Ronald) Pedersen of Cedar Falls; a son, Michael (Julie) of Porter, Texas; a stepdaughter, Amy Stansbury of Evergreen, Colo.; a stepson, Dan Volbruck of Phoenix; 12 grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and three stepgreat-grandchildren.

Preceded in death by three sisters, Edna Mowery, Ethel Myers and Mabel Heerkes; three grandchildren; a great-grandson; and a stepgrandson.

Services: 9 a.m. Saturday at St. Athanasius Catholic Church, Jesup, with burial in Mount Olivet Catholic Cemetery, Waterloo. Visitation from 3 to 8 p.m. today at White Funeral Home, Jesup, where there will be a 3 p.m. Knights of Columbus rosary and a 7 p.m. vigil service. Visitation also an hour before services Saturday at the church.
