CEDAR FALLS - Ralph Eugene Helmick, 85, of Cedar Falls, formerly of What Cheer, died Sunday, Aug. 28, at the Western Home Communities.

He was born March 4, 1926, near Blakesburg, son of Isaac and Opal Husted Helmick. He married Shirley Foster in 1953 at Central Christian Church, Des Moines. She preceded him in death.

Mr. Helmick graduated from Bussey High School in 1944, then moved to Texas where he worked on an oil rig until 1950. That same year he moved to Des Moines where he worked at Super Value. After moving to Waterloo he worked for Clute's Super Market and John Deere, retiring in 1973.

Survived by three sons, Victor (Donna) of Waterloo, David (Kelley) of Spring, Texas, and Douglas (Kim) of Fort Dodge; a daughter, Angeleta (Mikeal) Smith of Hopkins, Minn.; eight grandchildren; and a sister, Esther (Don) Dannels of Newton.

Preceded in death by two brothers, Melvin and William; and four sisters, Lucille Moody, Flossie Smith, Dorothy Lorenz and Neva Matthews.

Services: 10 a.m. Friday at Harden Funeral Chapel, What Cheer, with burial in Sixteen Cemetery near Thornburg. Visitation from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be directed to the What Cheer Opera House.
