CEDAR FALLS - Richard Eugene Conerd, 89, of Windsor Nursing and Rehab Center, died there Friday, Aug. 26, of natural causes.

He was born June 29, 1922, in Waterloo, son of Earl and Neva Murphy Conerd. He married Dorothy Karns on Aug. 16, 1947, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Waterloo.

Mr. Conerd attended school in Waterloo and joined the U.S. Army in 1942, where he served in the European theater under Gen. George S. Patton with the 103rd Infantry Division. He retired as a custodian at Waterloo East High School and was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church. He also ran a small engine and saw sharpening business in Waterloo for many years.

Survived by his wife; a son, Steve of Cedar Falls; a daughter, Diana (Richard) Schmidt of Onalaska, Wis.; four grandchildren; a great-grandchild; three brothers, Earl (Carol) of Quasqueton, Daniel (Agnes) of Independence and David (Christine Wharff) of Evansdale; and two sisters, Norma O'Donnell of Evansdale and Nancy Robbins of Eugene, Ore.

Preceded in death by a brother, James; and four sisters, Geraldine McCraney, Jeanne Timmerman, Shirley McCord, and Diana Conerd at birth.

Services: 11 a.m. Wednesday at Immanuel Lutheran Church, where visitation begins at 9 a.m., with burial in Garden of Memories Cemetery, both in Waterloo. Military honors will be conducted by the U.S. Army National Guard Honor Guard. Parrott & Wood Chapel of Memories, an Overton Family Service, Waterloo, is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be directed to the Alzheimer's Association.
