[Waterloo Courier, Tuesday, August 23, 2011]

Jon J. Havenstrite, 38, of Onalaska, Wis., passed away unexpectedly on Aug. 19, 2011, in the place he loved the most, with the people he loved the most, on Rainey Lake in Canada. He was born May 29, 1973, to Michael and Diana (Koch) Havenstrite. He married Alana Gardner on July 1, 1995, in Cedar Falls. Jon's love was his family, his friends and anything nature.

After graduation from Cedar Falls High School in 1991, Jon continued his education at the University of Northern Iowa where he studied biology and swam on the college swim team. Jon then attended the University of Iowa College of Dentistry and, in 2000, became a dentist in the United States Navy. His Naval career gave him wonderful adventures in San Diego, the Marine Corps Base Hawaii and in Great Lakes Naval Base, before making Onalaska his home. Jon loved going to work every day. He provided a personable level of care and concern to all his patients. Anyone who worked with Jon would come to know him and love him like they were family. The staff at Oak Forest Dental became his working family.

Jon is survived by his loving wife, Alana; their two amazing daughters, Ellie (12 years) and Natalie (11 years); his father and mother, Michael and Diana of Cedar Falls; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Dennis and Jan Gardner of Onalaska; brother-in-law Brad Gardner; and numerous aunts, uncles and other family members and friends.

He was preceded in death by his brother, James; his maternal grandparents, Edgar and Darlene Koch; and paternal grandparents, Martin and Darlene Cooney.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 25, at First Lutheran Church, 410 Main St., Onalaska. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 26, at First Lutheran Church. Pastor Jason Stanton will officiate. Military honors will be provided by the U.S. Navy.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred. Please send to: The Ellie & Natalie Havenstrite Scholarship Fund.

Coulee Region Cremation Group, La Crosse, Wis., is assisting with the arrangements.
