WATERLOO - Gary E. Slocum, 68, of Waterloo, died at home Thursday, May 1, 2008, of heart failure.

Funeral services for Mr. Slocum will be at 11 a.m. today at Kearns, Huisman-Schumacher Chapel on Kimball, with full military honors by Becker-Chapman American Legion Post 138 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1623. A private family burial will be later in Garden of Memories Cemetery.

Public visitation will be one hour before services today at the funeral home.

Memorials may be directed to the family.

Gary was born on June 23, 1939, in Cerro Gordo County, son of Charles and Marzena Kuhns Slocum. He married Kathleen K. Blok on April 25, 1970, in Galena, Illinois.

Mr. Slocum attended school in Greene then served in the U.S. Army as a medical orderly. He was a sheet metal worker with Local 45 of the Sheet Metal Workers Union in Des Moines and had worked for several years with Meyer Sheet Metal in Waterloo until his retirement.

In his spare time, Gary enjoyed fishing and loved working with wood. Over the years he made many creative gifts for his family.

He is survived by his wife; three daughters, Robin (Ed) Ribble of Evansdale, Michelle (Chris) Brooks of Waterloo and Misty (Lance) Thoe of Ventura; two sons, Bill (Chrissy) of New Port Richey, Fla., and Gary Lee of Mason City; nine grandchildren and a great-grandchild; a sister, Charlene (Ron) Barth of Marshalltown; and two brothers, Larry (Darlene) of Allison and Dan (Nancy) of Independence.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Ronald, Richard and Tom; and a grandson, Dustin Colby.
