WATERLOO - John Patrick "J.P." "Pat" Huff Sr., 87, of Waterloo, died at home Saturday, June 25, from natural causes.

He was born July 15, 1923, in Dodge, Neb., son of Robert and Caroline Huff. He married Barbara W. "Bobbie" Holbrook on Jan. 12, 1944, in St. Joseph Catholic Church, Waterloo.

Mr. Huff graduated from Our Lady of Victory Academy in 1941 and served in the Merchant Marines during World War II. In 1945 he started Burns and Huff Construction with his lifelong friend, Cecil Burns, and later Homeway Construction and then Huff Construction Co., Waterloo.

Survived by his wife; seven sons, John Patrick Jr. (Jean) of Gilbertville, Greg (Sandy) of Hot Springs, Ark., Robert (Kaye) of Waverly, Mike (Pat) of Cedar Falls, Tim (Adele) of Kansas City, and Chris (Kim) and Tony, both of Waterloo; four daughters, Anne (Mike) Betts of Cedar Falls, Cynthia (Tim) Huff-Scully of Minneapolis, Monica (Kim) Robbins of Cedar Falls and Cecile (Tate) Knipp of Waterloo; 26 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Margaret Ann Nelson of Sun City, Ariz., and Mary Jean Craft of Piedmont, Calif.

Preceded in death by a brother, Robert; a grandchild; and a great-grandchild.

Memorial services: 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Queen of Peace Catholic Church, with inurnment in Mount Olivet Cemetery. Graveside military rites will be conducted by Waterloo AMVETS 19 and Evansdale AMVETS 31, with flag presentation by the Iowa Army Honor Guard. Visitation from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on South Street, where there will be a 6 p.m. vigil. Visitation also an hour before services Tuesday at the church.

Memorials may be directed to the Waterloo Public Library or Allen Hospice Services, in lieu of flowers.

An entrepreneur who pursued many business interests, Pat was a good cook, skilled bridge player and a voracious reader who loved to discuss politics, the stock market and world affairs. He was a man of strong principles and work ethic and provided his family with rich experiences.
