WATERLOO - Opal M. Hirsch, 77, of Waterloo, died Saturday, June 4, at Allen Hospital of natural causes.

She was born Oct. 13, 1933, at home in Independence, daughter of Hugo and Anna Maye Weston Melka. She married Fred Hirsch on Nov. 10, 1956, in Columbus, Miss. He died June 29, 1994.

Mrs. Hirsch graduated from high school in Independence in 1951 and was a telephone operator in Waterloo until her retirement. She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church.

Survived by a son, Rodney of Waterloo; a grandson, Chris Hirsch of Columbia, Ill.; a sister, Velma Nabholz of Mayo, Fla.; and a sister-in-law, Tootie Melka of Independence.

Preceded in death by an infant son, Mark; an infant grandson, John Hirsch; a granddaughter, Kristin Cardner; two brothers, Harry and Donald Melka; and two sisters, Glenda Nabholz and Dorothy Schmidt.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Grace Lutheran Church, with burial in Garden of Memories Cemetery. Visitation from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Parrott & Wood Chapel of Memories, an Overton Family Service

Memorials may be directed to Grace Lutheran Church Sewing Circle, 1024 W. Eighth St., Waterloo 50702.

Opal loved to sew and spend time with family, especially her grandchildren. She enjoyed traveling, planning family vacations and family genealogy. Opal was a member of the Ladies Aide and Sewing Circle at her church.
