WATERLOO - Carl B. Zimmerman, 80, of Waterloo, died Saturday, April 23, at Lakeview Landing of Friendship Village.

Carl was born June 23, 1930, in Waterloo, son of Arthur and Macetta Browning Zimmerman. His mother died when Carl was a teenager and his father later married Flora Chilberg. Carl attended Kingsley Elementary, West Junior High and graduated from West High School. On June 22, 1949, he enlisted in the Air Force for a year of active duty and a military career in the Air Force Reserve, which spanned 34 years, retiring with the rank of Colonel in 1990.

Carl married Lou Anne Leonard on June 30, 1956, in Bremen, Ohio, six months after meeting on a blind date at University of Iowa. Lou Anne died Dec. 9, 2008.

Carl's family loved to travel and spent a lot of time camping. In high school Carl played football and was president of the Hi-Y Club. Carl graduated from University of Iowa with an undergraduate (1953) and law degree (1956). He returned to Waterloo and practiced law with his father until his father's death. During his career he also was in partnership with Evan "Curly" Hultman and the late Carl H. Pesch. He continued in practice at the Zimmerman Law Office until recently.

He was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, serving as a Trustee, Elder, Deacon, on the Session. He was active in Boy Scouts of America, earning the Eagle Scout and Explorer's Ranger Award as a youth. He served as Council Commissioner, was a Vigil member of Order of the Arrow, and a 1984 recipient of the Silver Beaver Award. He also attended Philmont Scout Ranch Training Center and three National Scout Jamborees. He was a 50-plus year member and past president of Kiwanis Club, and a member of national, state and local bar associations, the Cedar Valley Historical Society, Alpha Phi Omega National Service Fraternity, and the Republican Party. He was national vice president for Air of the Reserve Officers Association, past state president of the Air Force Association, and active with the Military Officers Association of America.

Carl is survived by his son, Charlie (Missy) Zimmerman of Washington, Ill.; granddaughters, Paige and Corinne Zimmerman; two nieces and three nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; stepmother, Flora Zimmerman; and two sisters, Louise Scheele and Helen Hickman.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Westminster Presbyterian Church, with burial in Waterloo Memorial Park Cemetery with military rites by the U.S. Air Force. Visitation from 3 to 7 p.m. Friday at Locke Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Carl B. and Lou Anne Zimmerman Fund, c/o Community Foundation of Northeast Iowa.
