She was born Jan. 17, 1922, in Waterloo, daughter of Fred and Tessie Balaska Kowal. She married Harold Melton March 25, 1944, at First Presbyterian Church in Waterloo. He died in 1981.

Survived by a son, Dan (Laura) of Waterloo; two daughters, Jean (Rick) Curran and Julie (Jay "Tony") Podhaski, all of Waterloo; eight grandchildren, Jennifer (Brandon) Steen, Sarah Melton, Katie Melton, Jamie (Joe) Barnett, Natalie (Chris) Smith, Bryan (Kati) Curran, Aaron (Christina) and Nick Podhaski; nine great-grandchildren, Sierra and Rush Steen, Caiden, Ryley and Syndey Barnett, Jace and Macy Smith and Caysen and Maddox Curran; a sister, Katherine Farrell of Pennsylvania; a brother, Paul (Lora) Kowal of Waterloo; a special niece, Betty Moses of Waterloo; and many nieces and nephews.

Preceded in death by three sisters, Anne Moses, Olga VanNatta and Jo Fanger; a brother, John Kowal; and a grandson, Michael Melton.

Mary enjoyed her family the most. She loved being with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She used to say, "those kids are what I live for." She also enjoyed playing bingo and gardening. Grandma Mimi had a special way of teaching all of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren how to tie their shoes and she took pride in that. We were all blessed to have experienced her love and guidance. Her family will forever miss the special bond she shared with each and every one of them. Her ability to listen and be supportive will always be remembered.

Services 10 a.m. Wednesday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway, with burial in Garden of Memories Cemetery. Public visitation from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday and for an hour before services Wednesday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be directed to Cedar Valley Hospice.
