Roswitha Maria Marold was born in Dusseldorf, Germany on April 10, 1940, to Leni and Theodore Giesen. Following World War II, Roswitha, her mother, stepfather and three siblings came to the United States in late 1950.

She was president of her class in 1959, and received her diploma from Cedar Falls High School. Following high school, Roswitha attended Iowa State Teacher's College where she graduated with a bachelor's degree in English. After receiving her degree, she married Fredrick William Marold, they were married for 17 years and had two children, Kathryn and Robert. She was a devoted mother, and was also actively involved in the community. She was a founding member of Cedar Valley Friends of Hospice and president of the Symphony Guild. In addition, she was particularly dedicated to the UNI Foundation, Cedar Arts Forum, Gallagher Bluedorn Performing Arts Center, Waterloo Downtown Rotary and Goodwill Auxiliary. She was instrumental in the development of the annual Symphony Dinners, which were a major source of funding for the Waterloo Cedar Falls Symphony for almost 20 years. She had a passion for interior design and decorated her homes like they belonged in Architectural Digest. She was an exceptional cook and hostess, and loved spending time with her family and friends.

In 1984 she began her own business, the Victoria Room, a fashion boutique which she ran successfully for 25 years. Along with her daughter and best friend, Kathryn, the Victoria Room became renowned for their style and service throughout the state from 1992-2008. Roswitha retired in 2008 but remained active in helping Kathryn continue operating her boutique.

On Jan. 9, 2011, Roswitha's life ended unexpectedly in a tragic plane crash. She and her close friend and companion Dr. Michael Welton were returning from Arizona where they had spent the holidays with family and friends. She left life as she would have wanted, as beautiful on the outside as she was on the in.

Roswitha was preceded in death by her parents, Leni and Theodore, her stepfather, Donald Muller and her ex-husband, Fred. Her memory will be cherished by her daughter and son-in-law, Kathryn and Michael Fain of Waterloo, Iowa; son Robert and his wife Mindy Marold of Ankeny, Iowa; brother Udo Giesen; sister Karin and her husband James Hagenson; brother Donald and his wife Melinda Muller and five grandchildren, who she so dearly loved: Olivia, Isabella and Sophia Fain and Samuel and Maxwell Marold.

WESTCLIFFE, CO (KWWL) --Family members, through a friend, confirmed to KWWL-TV Monday night that Dr. Michael O. Welton and his close friend, Roswitha Marold, are the two victims of a Sunday plane crash in Colorado.

The plane, owned by the well-known Waterloo urologist, disappeared Sunday afternoon in the mountains of Colorado. Searchers located the single engine Piper Monday afternoon with two people inside and no survivors.

The single-engine, six seat Piper Malibu, owned by Dr. Welton, took off from the Phoenix area on Sunday headed for Pueblo, Colorado. Friends say Dr. Welton made frequent trips to Arizona, piloting his Piper airplane.

According to FlightAware.com, the flight departed Phoenix Deer Valley Airport at 1 p.m. Iowa time Sunday.

Officials say the plane disappeared from radar at about 2:45 p.m. Sunday after sending a distress signal when it was over the Sangre de Cristo mountains about 50 miles west of Pueblo.

Capt. Scott Orr with the Civil Air Patrol says the plane was found about a mile east of Blueberry Peak.

Positive identification of the two bodies is expected sometime Tuesday.

Dr. Welton is a longtime urologist with Northern Iowa Urological Associates in Waterloo. His office told KWWL-TV that Dr. Welton's family was already on its way to Colorado. In addition, a family friend told KWWL-TV that Roswitha Marold was with Dr. Welton on the trip back to Iowa from Arizona. Roswitha Marold is the former owner of The Victoria Room women's clothing store in downtown Waterloo.

Friends say Dr. Welton loved to fly and had a close call in March of 2009. Dr. Welton was forced to make an emergency landing west of Cedar Falls on Jepsen Rd. Investigators said the plane's engine cut out as it approached to land at the Waterloo Regional Airport. Our cameras captured the family removing luggage from the plane before Welton took off from the gravel road to land safely at the airport.
