WATERLOO - Russell D. Strempke, 79, of Waterloo, died Sunday, Dec. 26, at Covenant Medical Center emergency room of natural causes.

He was born on the family farm in rural Buchanan County on Oct. 10, 1931, son of Raymond and Eva Hill Strempke. He married Bonnie Brown on Aug. 31, 1957.

Mr. Strempke was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having serving during the Korean War as an amphibious vehicle driver with the 764th Anti-Aircraft Artillery Battalion. He worked as a machine operator with John Deere Waterloo Works from 1955 to 1987, when he retired. He was a member of a coin club, was a former member of VFW and UAW Local 838 and belonged to a breakfast club made up of other retired Deere workers. He also was a member of Grace Lutheran Church.

Survived by: his wife; three sons, Douglas and Dennis, both of Clinton, Ark., and Danny of 29 Palms, Calif.; a daughter, Tammy (James) Courbat of Waterloo; four grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren; three stepgreat-grandchildren; and two sisters, Sherry (Dave) Hall and Betty Osvald, both of Independence.

Preceded in death by two sisters, Beverly Wroten and Shirley Morris.

Services 10 a.m. Friday at Grace Lutheran Church, with burial in Garden of Memories Cemetery. Military honors will be conducted by Iowa National Guard Honor Guard. Public visitation from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Parrott & Wood Chapel of Memories, an Overton Family Service.

Memorials may be directed to the family.

Russell enjoyed listening to country music and smoking his pipe, and he especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and teaching them that little tidbit he himself had just learned that day.
