SUDDEN DEATH AT HUDSON

Simeon Leonard Smith Suddenly
Succumbs to Heart Failure -
Did Valiant Service for His
County - Funeral Thursday Afternoon

Hudson, May 4- Shortly before 6 o'clock last evening Simeon Leonard Smith, on of the most highly respected residents of this place, passed from this life of heart failure and other maladies. Deceased had been in apparently good health up to a few days ago. He moved to Hudson from Lincoln Township less than a year ago, but had been a frequent visitor to the city for the past forty years. He was highly respected, well-to-do and leavea record for right living.

Mr. Smith was born in Franklin County, New York, April 21, 1835, where he lived until shortly before the breaking out of the civil war. On August 13, 1961, he enlisted as a member of the Co. f. 36th Illinois Infantry, and participated in the battles of Pea Ridge, Perryville and Stone River. He was wounded in the right knee at Perryville, and at Stone River was wounded twice, receiving such severe injuries in the latter engagement that he received an honorable discharge from the service. Returning home, he was married December 9, 1863, to Miss Elizabeth Pitcher at LaSalle, Illinois.

He leaves his wife, Mrs. Elizabeth Smith, son, Ernest, and a daughter, Minnie J. Smith, all of Hudson. Also two sisters, Mrs. Ruth Brayton and Mrs. Sarah Baker, of Dewey, Minnesota.

Deceased came to Lincoln Township, this county, forty years ago, since which time he has been extensively engaged in farming and stock raising. He owns a well improved farm of 240 acres in that township, which he left less than a year ago to becaome a resident of this place.

Mr. Smith was a member of Thompson Post No. 286, G.A.R. at Reinbeck.

The funeral will be held at 2 o'clock Thursday at the Brethern church this city, and interment will be made in the cemetery here.
