FISCHER, BAIN, SIGURDSON

WATERLOO — Dr. Harold E. "Doc" "Hal" Fischer, 81, of Chandler, Ariz., formerly of Waterloo, died Wednesday, Dec. 22, in Chandler.

He was born Sept. 11, 1929, in Langdon, N.D., son of H.W. "Harley" and Frances Bain Fischer. He married Irene Landsgaard on Nov. 29, 1956, in Fargo, N.D.

He attended University of North Dakota in Grand Forks, N.D., Northwestern University Dental School in Chicago and University of Iowa for specialty in orthodontics. Dr. Fischer served as a captain in the U.S. Air Force from 1954-56, stationed in Japan. Dr. Fischer had an orthodontics practice in Waterloo for 33 years and owned and operated a tree farm close to Elgin for 40 years.

Survived by his wife; four sons, Timothy (Jamie) of Tempe, Ariz., Andrew of Chandler, Ariz., Douglas of Elgin and Anthony (Denise) of Jesup; a daughter, Jean Fischer of Cedar Falls; a sister, M. Joan (John) Sigurdson of Escondido, Calif.; six grandchildren, Cristina and Blake Fischer of Chandler, Joey Ann and Austin Fischer of Tempe and Hayden and Laney Fischer of Jesup; and many nieces and nephews.

Private family celebration of life in Chandler. Memorial Mass will be in spring 2011 at St. Peter's Church, Clermont.

Memorials: in lieu of flowers, may be directed to St. Peter's Catholic Church, 604 Larrabee St., Clermont, IA, 52135, or to the Myositis Association, Inclusion Body Myositis Research, 1737 King St, Suite 600, Alexandria, VA 22314.

He was an avid golfer and loved being on the water at lakes, rivers and wintering on the Sea of Cortez in San Felipe, Baja, Mexico. He enjoyed sports, particularly watching his sons play ice hockey, and was a devoted fan of Iowa Hawkeyes football and basketball and Phoenix Suns basketball.
