SIOUX CITY — Dorothy E. Bradwell (Rowland, Boyle) Campbell, formerly of Waterloo, died at Holy Spirit Retirement Home, Sioux City, on Nov. 17, 2010, from an M.S. dementia and residual complications of a stroke.
Dorothy was born Feb. 29, 1916, on a farm near Meltonville. She was the youngest of three daughters born to Albert and Mary Ellen (Simpson) Bradwell. She attended school in Otranto, and later in life attended A.I.B. in Des Moines.
Dorothy married Herbert W. Rowland Jr. in 1932, and to this union was born her only child, Beverly. They farmed near St. Ansgar until moving to Waterloo in 1937. There she worked various jobs, including at a war plant during World War II. She was a Red Cross volunteer nurse, doing her hours at the hospital after work. Herbert died in Germany in 1945.
Dorothy owned and ran a restaurant in Bayard from 1946-1948, then returned to Waterloo and worked in the offices at John Deere until her marriage to Edward F. Boyle of Waterloo in June 1949. They moved several times while Ed was with the Cubs organization, finally returning to Cedar Falls in 1957, when he became the executive vice president for the Chamber of Commerce there. Ed died in 1971.
Dorothy remained in Cedar Falls until her marriage to Theron "T.A." Campbell in 1976, when she returned to Waterloo. He died in 1985.
She had been a 50-plus-year member of the Royal Neighbors of America, and the American Legion Auxiliary. She was a longtime member of the Cedar Falls Woman's Club, where she served in several offices. She also was a member of the Waterloo Elklettes before her move to Sioux City in 1999.
Dorothy's interests included writing poetry, for which she had won awards from the Iowa General Federation of Woman's Clubs, reading, working crossword puzzles, and she was an avid Cubs fan. She will be remembered by her family as a loving, hard-working mother, aunt and grandmother, with a unique sense of humor, a fierce competitor at card games and a lover of stories and jokes.
Dorothy is survived by her daughter, Beverly Rowland Hinds of Sioux City; a stepson, Tom Campbell of Houston; three grandchildren and their families, grandson Mark (Ann) Hinds of Sioux City, and their children Sarah Hinds (Jon) Case, and her great-great-grandchildren Alex, Charlotte, Jonathan (Jack) and Benjamin Case of Sioux City, Katherine (Kate) Hinds (Josh) Lanagan of Naperville, Ill., and Brad Hinds of Sioux City; grandson Steve (Maureen) Hinds of DeSoto, Texas, and their sons Justin Hinds of Dallas and Jared Hinds of Houston; granddaughter Lynne Hinds (Walter L.) Peterson, and their twin daughters Alexis and Spenser Peterson of Sioux City. Also surviving her are a nephew, Brad Woodiwiss (Cathy) and his daughters of Lone Tree; and a great-niece, Joli Vollers of Ames.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Albert and Mary Ellen Bradwell; sisters Edna Woodiwiss (Maurice) of Osage and Isabel "Sally" Vitteteaux (Howard) of Des Moines; a niece, Gwen Vitteteaux Vollers Young; and three cousins raised as brothers, Robert, Donald and Gordon Simpson.
Dorothy chose to be cremated and a celebration of life service was held at the Holy Spirit Retirement Home Chapel on Nov. 20, with Father Dennis Meinen of Holy Spirit Retirement Home and Don Wood of First United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be at the Osage Cemetery in summer 2011. Arrangements were under the direction of Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel, Sioux City.
