ENGELKES, SMIT, BLUNT, LEBLANC, SCHNUCKER

CEDAR FALLS - Carroll E. "Jim" Engelkes, 90, of Albuquerque, N.M., formerly of Grundy Center and Cedar Falls, died Sunday, Dec. 12, at Montebello Assisted Living, Albuquerque.

He was born Jan. 28, 1920, in Grundy County, son of Cornelius and Clara Smit Engelkes. He married Faith Blunt.

Mr. Engelkes attended the University of Iowa where he obtained undergraduate degrees in both mathematics and physics and his law degree. In between degrees he served in the U.S. Army in the Pacific as a meteorologist. He was a private attorney in Grundy Center, county attorney for Grundy County and in 1961 was appointed a state judge for the 1st Judicial District, which included Black Hawk and Grundy counties. He served as a district judge until his retirement in 1984. He was a member of Bethany Presbyterian Church, Grundy Center.

Survived by: his wife; three daughters, Catherine LeBlanc, Lois Engelkes and Anne Engelkes; a son, James; two grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; a brother, Wilbur of La Porte City; and a sister, Anna Mae Schnucker of Parkersburg.

Preceded in death by: two brothers, John R. and Harold W.

Private memorial Services: will be held at a later date.
