WATERLOO - Robert J. Payne, 84, of Waterloo, died Thursday, Dec. 9, at Ravenwood Nursing and Rehab Center.

He was born Dec. 29, 1925, in Waterloo, son of Jesse J. and Anna M. Overkamp Payne. He married Mary Lou Barrett June 11, 1960, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Waterloo.

He graduated from East Waterloo High School in 1944 and from University of Denver in Colorado in 1954. Mr. Payne served in the U.S. Navy during World War II in the Pacific theatre. He was a production supervisor at John Deere for 29 years, retiring in 1984. After retirement, he was a John Deere Tour Guide at the North East Site.

Survived by: his wife; two sons, Michael and Timothy (Susan), both of Cedar Rapids; two grandchildren, Joshua and Isabella Hamby; two nephews; and a niece.

Preceded in death by: four brothers, Edward, Walter, Howard and Laverne.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Edward Catholic Church, with burial in Calvary Cemetery. Full military rites conducted by Waterloo and Evansdale Amvets Posts 19 and 31, with flag folding by Iowa Army Honor Guard. Public visitation from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway, with a 4 p.m. rosary and 7 p.m. vigil. Visitation will continue for an hour before services Monday at the church.

Memorials: may be directed to Cedar Valley Hospice or Myasthenia Gravis Foundation.

Bob enjoyed working with area youth by coaching Junior Optimist Baseball and Junior Bowling.
