Edward Fredrick Wagner, 86, passed away Oct. 23, 2010, in Phoenix.

Edward was born Sept. 1, 1924, in Waterloo, to Annabelle Rothermel-Wagner and Steven M. Wagner. Edward attended Saint Mary's Grade School and Sacred Heart High School. He was employed at Rath Packing Company when he was 18 years old. Edward was drafted into the Army during World War II in April of 1943. He took basic training at Camp Grant, McCall and Fort Bragg. He was a paratrooper in the 17th and 82nd Airborne Division, fought in the Battle of the Bulge in the winter of 1944-1945, and served during the occupation of Germany from 1945-46.

Edward married Ruth Alice Baumann (deceased) on Nov. 15, 1948. They had two children, Mary Ann (Smith) and Stephen. Edward worked for many years as an institutional food salesman for Jones Wholesale. Edward and Ruth moved to Phoenix in 1987.

Edward is survived by his daughter, Mary Ann Smith (husband Tom); son, Stephen (wife Marla); three grandchildren, Michelle, Michael and Matthew Wagner; and a sister, Pauline Goodwinson. Edward was a man of faith who loved the Lord, his family, friends, and serving his country. He is now at peace in the holy presence of God, and we look forward to seeing him again.

A memorial service will be held at the V.A. National Memorial Cemetery, 23029 N. Cave Creek Road, on Wednesday, Nov. 3, at 10 am. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations to Phoenix Hospice of the Valley or The American Heart Association.
