[Waterloo Courier, Sunday, October 24, 2010]

John W. Johnson, age 67, of Dayton, Wash., born Feb. 1, 1943, to Harvey and Leona Johnson, died March 21, 2010, at Providence St. Mary's Medical Center, Walla Walla, Wash., after a battle with Pulmonary Fibrosis. At his request, no service was held. A celebration of his life will take place this month with family members in the mountains that he so loved, and there his ashes will be released.

John grew up in the Evansdale and Waterloo area and had many lifelong friends in Iowa. John married Ellen Baruth on Dec. 18, 1965, in Waterloo. The couple left for the Northwest in 1971 and made their home in the Walla Walla valley, where John worked for the Washington State Penitentiary for the last 17 years. John loved to hunt and fish and thoroughly enjoyed his trips to Alaska with his sons and sons-in-law. John and Ellen loved the Oregon coast and the Pacific ocean, especially when it was stormy, and went there as often as they could.

John is survived by his wife, Ellen, at their Dayton home; their four grown children, Jon T. Johnson of Des Moines, Wash., Dawn Peters (Bill) of Dayton, Matt Johnson (Milissa) of College Place, Wash., and Heather Hays (Chad) of Dayton. John has seven terrific grandchildren that brought only joy to him: Mandy and Jake Peters, Hailey, Thor and Scarlett Johnson, and Alex and Taylor Hays. Also surviving him are his brother, Luverne Johnson, and wife Evelyn, of Walla Walla, and sisters, Bonnie Blitsch of Milwaukee, Ore., Judy Bradford of Walla Walla and Eileen Royce of Salt Lake City, as well as many nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by his sister, Jan Henderson of Dayton; his mother-in-law, Mabel DeVries who recently passed, formerly of Denver, lowa, and his parents and grandparents. John will be missed greatly by his family, friends, and all who knew him.
