WATERLOO - Myrtle A. "Gladys" Ellis, 89, of Grinnell, formerly of Waterloo, died Thursday, Oct. 14, at Mayflower Retirement Community in Grinnell of natural causes.

She was born July 11, 1921, in Waterloo, daughter of Harry L. and Dorothy Arens Smith. She was raised by her stepmother, Gertrude Smith. She married Joseph A. Ellis Aug. 1, 1940, in Waverly. He died Jan. 31, 2003.

Mrs. Ellis was employed by Schoitz Hospital for 20 years, retiring in 1975.

Survived by: a son, Joseph A. Ellis Jr. of Waterloo; two daughters, Patricia (Ivan) Chipp of Evansdale and Peggy (Darrell, Sr.) Billington of Novinger, Mo.; two sisters, Dorothy (Melvin) Castleberry of Ufaula, Okla., and Hazel Nemmers of Realto, Calif.; 10 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Preceded in death by: a sister, Irene Wallbaum.

Services: 11 a.m. Monday at Kearns, Huisman-Schumacher Chapel on Kimball, Waterloo, with burial in Garden of Memories Cemetery. Public visitation from 2 to 4 p.m. today, and for an hour before services Monday at the funeral home.
