CEDAR FALLS — Merlin L. "Smitty" Smith, 79, of Cedar Falls, died Monday, Oct. 4, at Western Home Communities' Elizabeth E. Martin Health Center.

He was born July 27, 1931, in Waterloo, son of William and Hilda Keding Smith. He married Kathleen A. Fenelon on Sept. 13, 1952, in Waterloo. She died May 20, 2006.

Mr. Smith was a graduate of Waterloo East High School and served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean conflict. He was employed as a tool room foreman with Chamberlain Manufacturing, retiring after 42 years. In retirement, he was employed with Bancroft Flowers in delivery.

Survived by: two sons, Mike (Janie) Smith of Grand Junction, Colo., and Brian (Jenny) Smith of Ackworth; two daughters, Susan (Tom) Aulwes of Cedar Rapids and Sara (Jerry) Freeseman of Holland; 10 grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

Preceded in death by: a brother, Virgil; and two sisters, Virginia Nottger and Geraldine Sidebottom.

Services: 2 p.m. Friday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, with burial in Mount Olivet Cemetery, both in Waterloo. Military honors will be conducted by Cedar Falls AMVETS Post 49. Public visitation from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Richardson Funeral Home, where there will be a 7 p.m. vigil service.

Memorials: may be directed to Cedar Valley Hospice or the Western Home Foundation.
