CEDAR FALLS - Wanita Johnson Kane, 87, of Cedar Falls, formerly of Oelwein, died Tuesday, Aug. 31, at Thalman Square of Western Home Communities in Cedar Falls.

She was born March 20, 1923, in Wadena, daughter of Warren and Winnifred Crooks Joyce. She married Eugene F. Johnson on May 8, 1946, in West Union. He died Aug. 17, 1982.

She was preceded in death by her brother, (Patrick) Kenneth Joyce, and her sister, Viola Marie (Joyce) Scully.

Wanita had no children, but is survived by 12 loving nieces and nephews: Mary Deann (Scully) Downs, Patrick C. Joyce, Michael J. Joyce, Marcia (Scully) Wollerman, Peggy (Marguerite Joyce) Fisher, Neil R. Scully, Patricia (Scully) Grimm, Kevin K. Joyce, Maureen (Scully) Bright, James E. Scully, Christine (Scully) Allen and Kathy (Joyce) Seaborg.

She later married Lawrence Kane on July 13, 1991. He died July 1, 1994. Survived by seven stepchildren, Don Kane, Larry Kane, Terry Kane, Kathy (Kane) Blake, Ron Kane, Connie (Kane) McCaffrey and Warren Kane.

Wanita graduated from West Union High School in 1940. She held various secretarial/clerical positions in Oelwein, including the Central Transit Warehouse, and retired from the city of Oelwein (City Hall). She loved to dance, was an avid golfer and a longtime member of the Oelwein Chapter of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas, Court St. Rita No. 321.

Services are 11 a.m. Friday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, with burial in Woodlawn Cemetery, both in Oelwein. Public visitation from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Jamison-Schmitz Funeral Home, Oelwein, with a Catholic Daughters of the Americas rosary beginning at 4:30 p.m., and a parish Scripture service at 5:30 p.m.
