WATERLOO - Gail E. "Gus" Mather, 85, of Waterloo, died Thursday, Aug. 26, at his home of natural causes.

He was born July 27, 1925, in Cedar Rapids, son of Thomas M. and Urania Buker Mather. He married Bertha "Bonnie" Phillips Sept. 7, 1946, in Waterloo. She died Aug. 29, 1999.

He was an engineer for the Rail Road for 47 years, retiring in 1985. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was a member of the Waterloo Amvets Post 19 and the Becker-Chapman American Legion Post 138.

Survived by: a son, Thomas Mather of Waterloo; three daughters, Susan Mather and Sandra Davies, both of Waterloo, and Cynthia Higdon of Fort Wayne, Ind.; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandson; a special friend, Mary Henry of Cedar falls; and his dog, B.G.

Preceded in death by: a sister, Velda O'Neal; and a great-grandson, Cory Tovar.

Services: 11 a.m. Tuesday at Kearns, Huisman-Schumacher Chapel on Kimball. Military rites will be conducted by the Waterloo Amvets Post 19 and Evansdale Amvets Post 31. Public visitation from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, and for an hour before services Tuesday at the funeral home. Private family graveside services will be held at a later date in Garden of Memories Cemetery.
