CEDAR FALLS - Viola H. Smith Hoffman, 99, of Cedar Falls, died Wednesday, July 28, at Cedar Falls Health Care Center.

She was born Dec. 14, 1910, near Aplington, daughter of John and Minnie Pruisner Brandt. She married James Smith on Feb. 23, 1931, and they later divorced. In 1964 she married Leonard Hoffman until 1985.

Ms. Hoffman and her first husband farmed near Buck Grove and Aplington. In 1946 she became a pilot and was one of the first flying farmers' wives in Iowa. She worked at Hinson Manufacturing for 12 years.

Survived by: two sons, Elmer (Ana) of Tampa, Fla., and Parkersburg and Kenneth (Donis) of Cedar Falls; three grandchildren, Roxanne (Don) Botic, Kimberly (Jeff) Thompson and Scott (Carol) Smith; six great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; a sister, Mildred Lyons; a sister-in-law, Grace Brandt; four stepchildren; and several stepgrandchildren and stepgreat-grandchildren.

Preceded in death by: a sister, Jeanette; a brother, John Brandt; and a grandson, David Smith.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Richardson Funeral Home, Cedar Falls, with burial in Buck Grove Cemetery, Buck Grove. Public visitation from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday and for an hour before services Saturday at the funeral home.
