WATERLOO - John B. Desmond, 76, of Waterloo, died Sunday, July 25, at Allen Hospital of natural causes.

He was born April 26, 1934, in Van Nuys, Calif., son of Dennis and Audrey Brennand Desmond. He married Marilyn Price on Nov. 12, 1955, in Hayward, Calif.

Mr. Desmond attended San Jose State University and graduated from Minnesota Metropolitan University with a bachelor's degree in human resources. He was aide to Congressman Don Edwards of California and was campaign consultant for Robert Kennedy, Hubert Humphrey, Eugene McCarthy and Walter Mondale. He worked for the United Way in St. Paul, Minn., Spokane, Wash., Salem, Ore., and retired as executive director in Waterloo in 1996. He also authored two books: "The Last Revolutionary" and "Unite the Land." He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War and was a member and past president of the Unitarian Universalist Society of Black Hawk County.

Survived by: his wife; a son, Dennis (Rita) of Bluemont, Va.; a daughter, Justine Desmond of Waterloo; three grandchildren, Crystal (Eric) Hanson, Nicole Arends and Rachel Button; two great-grandchildren, Kevin and Logan Hanson; a sister, Kathleen Hague of Kent, Wash.; and his dog, Mr. Chips.

Preceded in death by: an infant brother, Teddy.

Services: 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Unitarian Universalist Society of Black Hawk County, followed by a time of fellowship and refreshments.

Memorials: may be directed to Cedar Bend Humane Society.
