Darlene Verlee Eagle, 92, of Waterloo, Iowa died Tuesday, July 20, 2010, at the Western Home in Cedar Falls, Iowa, after a brief illness. She was born Feb. 28, 1918, on a farm in Redfield, Iowa, the daughter of Nelson and Agnes Anthony Shook. She married Frank E. Eagle on Dec. 12, 1942, at Fort Frances chapel in Cheyenne, Wyo.

She graduated as her class valedictorian at Redfield High School and graduated from the Iowa State Teachers College (UNI) and Wartburg College with her bachelor's degree in elementary education and started her teaching career in Canton, Kan. She then taught in Scranton, Iowa, and later in the Waterloo School District at Elk Run Elementary in Elk Run Heights. She closed her career as a remedial reading instructor for the Parochial School System in the Waterloo and Raymond area after 34 years of teaching. She is still well-remembered and respected as a teacher by many of her former students who still reside in the Waterloo area as they spoke of her as "my favorite teacher."

She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother Claire and a sister Gretta.
She is survived by her husband, a daughter Tanya Crowe (Gene) of Cedar Falls, a son Steve of Prairie du Chien, six grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the chapel at Nazareth Lutheran Church in Cedar Falls with a luncheon to follow in the fellowship hall. Family inurnment services at Pointer Cemetery in Gilbertville to follow. Memorials and or flowers may be sent to Nazareth Lutheran Church, 7401 University Ave., Cedar Falls, IA 50613.
