Johan Regner "Johnny" Schmidt, 80, of Marshalltown, formerly of Cedar Falls, died at 6:05 p.m., Thursday, July 15, 2010, of lung cancer, at Iowa River Hospice Home in Marshalltown.

Following cremation, a memorial service will be held Monday, July 19, 2010, at 10:30 a.m. at Hope United Methodist Church in Marshalltown. A memorial gathering will be held Sunday evening, July 18, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Pursel Davis Funeral Home in Marshalltown with a graveside service at 3 p.m. Monday at Fredsville Lutheran Church Cemetery in rural Dike.

Johnny was born April 24, 1930, in Cedar Falls, Iowa to Karl and Mette Schmidt of rural Dike. He attended a country school near Dike, and later, Dike High School, graduating in 1947. After one year of college at Iowa State Teachers' College (UNI), he entered the Navy, serving one year of active duty and six years in the reserves. Following his honorable discharge from the Navy, he returned home and began working in the power plant at John Deere in Waterloo, where he eventually worked 36 years, attending the level of supervisor. On Nov. 23, 1951, he married Lorraine Hanson of Cedar Falls at Nazareth Lutheran Church, where he also became a member.

Over the years he was very active, both in his churches, and his community, serving on the church boards at Nazareth Lutheran in Cedar Falls, St. John's Bennington near Dunkerton, and St. John's Western Douglas near Waverly, as well as on the school board in Dunkerton. He also taught Sunday school and Bethel Bible Classes at Nazareth and was a member of the Shepherd's Staff there for many years. He sang in his churches' choirs, most recently in the choir at Hope United Methodist in Marshalltown.

In 1982 he retired from John Deere, and he and Lorraine spent the next 24 years traveling and enjoying family and friends. In August 2006 Lorraine passed away, leaving a huge hole in Johnny's life. Fortunately he met his second wife, Marilyn (McNamara) and they were married Aug. 9, 2008. She was with him until the end.

Johnny is survived by his second wife, Marilyn of Marshalltown, his daughters: Linda (Norm) Weitzel of Ames, Nancy (Ken) Crandell of Des Moines, Barbara (Rob Allman) Blough of Longmont, Colo., and Debra (Tom) Hauskins of Marion, 11 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and his sister, Vera Williamson of Santa Rosa, Calif.

Johnny was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, Lorraine, and a son, Jeffery.

Memorial contributions to honor Johnny may be directed to the Iowa River Hospice Home, Covenant Cancer Treatment Center, 200 E. Ridgeway Ave, Waterloo, 50702
