[Waterloo Courier, Sunday, July 4, 2010]

Erna Anna Jochum, 83, died Wednesday, June 30, at the Cedar Valley Hospice Home.

She was born on Sept. 22, 1926, in Munich, Germany, the daughter of Max and Eva Saffer Weber. Her formative years were shaped by the Great Depression and World War II. In 1948 she married L. James Jochum, who died in 1988. To this marriage were born two children, Alice Bachman (Richard) of Denver, Colorado, and Jim of Waterloo. For many years Erna worked for the Waterloo School System, retiring in 1989. In her later years she was particularly proud of her association with the Cedar Valley Hospice, where she served as a home visit volunteer for 18 years. Her family was the joy of her life, particularly her grandson, Ryan Bachman (Lisa) of Denver. Erna loved travel, especially trips back to Germany to visit family and friends.

She is survived by her children, grandson, step-grandchildren Teri Petersen (Dave) of Davenport and Brad and Hannah Bachman of Stanwood, as well as many nieces, nephews, dear friends and her kitty-girl.

A family conducted service will be held at Blessed Sacrament Church on Tuesday at 10 a.m., with a luncheon to follow in the parish hall. The family will greet friends and family at the church for an hour before the service. Inurnment will take place at a later time.

In lieu of flowers, please make contributions to Cedar Valley Hospice or the Cedar Bend Humane Society.

Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on South Street assisted the family.
