LA PORTE CITY — Michael Lawrence Dirkes, 100, of La Porte City, died Tuesday, June 29, at La Porte City Nursing and Rehab Center.

He was born July 12, 1909, in Two Inlets, Minn., son of Michael Lawrence and Anna Wilhelm Dirkes. He married Dorothy Lillian Cheney Feb. 12, 1941, in Kirksville, Mo. She died July 15, 2002.

He received his education in Two Inlets and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He worked at John Deere Co. in Waterloo, retiring in 1974. Mr. Dirkes was a member of the U.A.W. Local 838 and the Oelwein American Legion Ross Reid Post 9.

Survived by: a son, Lawrence (Lisa) Dirkes of Escondido, Calif.; three daughters, Kathleen (Everett) Bridgeman of Mount Auburn, Patricia (Jesse) Sweeney of Diamond, Mo., and Karen (Marvin) Freeland, also of Mount Auburn; eight grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Preceded in death by: three sisters; and five brothers.

Services: 11 a.m. Friday at Floral Hills Funeral Home, with burial in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens, rural Oelwein. Public visitation from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home, with a 7 p.m. parish Scripture service, and for an hour before services Friday at the funeral home. Military graveside rites by Oelwein American Legion Ross Reid Post 9.

He enjoyed playing cards at the Oelwein American Legion Ross Reid Post 9 and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.
