WATERLOO — Helen Joanne "Jo" Hanson, 79, of Waterloo, died Monday, June 28, at Covenant Medical Center of natural causes.

She was born Jan. 14, 1931, in Skidmore, Mo., daughter of Howard and Marguerite Alberta Merritt Masters. She married Donald Hanson Dec. 23, 1950, in Maryville, Mo.

She was a teacher, long-term sub and volunteered with language children until she received her LPN.

Survived by: her husband; two sons, Mark (Mary) Hanson of Iowa City and Andrew (Tracey) Hanson of Washington, D.C.; a daughter, Debora (Craig) Olson of Waterloo; six grandchildren, David (Brittany), Megan (Nick) Kelley, Andrew and Ben Finnegan and Dan and Scott Hanson; and a sister, Dorothy "June" Vest of Maryville, Mo.

Memorial services: 10:30 a.m. Friday at Parrott & Wood Chapel of Memories, an Overton Family service, with burial at a later date. Memorial visitation from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home, and for an hour before services Friday at the funeral home.

Memorials: may be directed to Grace Lutheran Church.

Jo enjoyed playing bridge, and the piano, birds and bird watching. She loved her family dearly, especially her grandchildren and her dog, Buffi. Jo will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
