CEDAR FALLS - Gary H. Demmel, 67, of Cedar Falls, formerly of Vinton, died Thursday, June 17, at Cedar Valley Hospice House, Waterloo, following a short illness with cancer.

He was born Aug. 28, 1942, in Waterloo, son of Harold and Ruth Dorsey Demmel. He married Carol Millar and Nancy Sampino, and on June 28, 1987, married Darline Balm at Sherrill.

Mr. Demmel graduated from Vinton's Washington High School, and served in the U.S. Army in Germany. He graduated from Luther College and attended Upper Iowa University. He was a social worker and also a truck driver for CRST, Westside and Schuster Trucking. He was a member of St. Timothy's United Methodist Church, Cedar Falls.

Survived by: his wife; a son, Matthew (Bressa) of Union; a daughter, Tanya Demmel of Tipton; three stepsons, Steve (Sara) Balm of Spirit Lake, Jon Balm (Angie Story) of Brooklyn and Brian (Nancy) Balm of Omaha, Neb.; a stepdaughter, Michelle Balm of Jesup; two grandsons; 11 stepgrandchildren; two great-grandchildren; eight stepgreat-grandchildren; and a sister, Marilyn (Jerry) O'Connor of Polk City.

Preceded in death by: a grandson; and a stepgranddaughter.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Timothy's United Methodist Church, Cedar Falls. Public visitation from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the church. Committal services and flag presentation will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Evergreen Cemetery, Vinton. Phillips Funeral Home, Vinton, is assisting the family.
