Waterloo Soldier, Samuel Palmes, Is Buried in Calvary

Funeral services for Private Samuel Palmes, who died of influenza and whose body was brought here from Camp Dodge yesterday were held at the O'Keefe & Towne chapel this afternoon. Rev. Father E. J. Slattery was in charge and burial was in Calvary. The remains were accompanied to this city by Corporal Harry Liebrecht.

Private Palmes left Waterloo with a contingent for Camp Dodge Sept. 5. He was jubilant over the fact that he was to have an opportunity to serve in the American army, and fight with his father and two brothers, who are serving in the army of his native country, Italy, where all his relatives reside. Palmes was 21 years of age and had been in America about five years. He was naturalized and at the time he entered the service he was employed at the Illinois Central shops.

(Contributor note: On the WWI draft registration card for Samuel Palmes, he provided his name as Sebastiano Palmisano. He was unsuccessful in his multiple efforts to volunteer for service, but was finally selected in the draft. - J.C.)
