Private Charles J. Smith (sic) died in France Sept 11, of scarlet fever. He was born in Barclay township, Black Hawk county, Jan 9, 1891. He attended the district school, then high school, from which he graduated at the age of 17. He attended business college and later was employed at the Iowa Dairy as bookkeeper. He was employed at the Scane Clothes shop at the time of his enlistment in the quartermaster corps. He was a bookkeeper in this department, while in France.

Surviving him are his father, August Smith (sic), R. 5, Waterloo; two sisters, Mrs. H. D. Melius, Dewar, and Mrs. Fred Willard, Waterloo; seven brothers, Philip, Spirit Lake; William, Mott, N. D.; John, Gus, Dave and George, Dewar. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Catholic Order of Forresters and the M. W. A. He was also a member of Sacred Heart church.

Day of Patriotic Events for K. C.

Beginning at 9 a.m. and continuing thruout the day, Waterloo council, Knights of Columbus, will celebrate Sunday as patriotic day. Memorial mass for Private Charles Schmidt, a knight who died in the service of his country, will be held at (missing) Catholic church at 9 o'clock and will be attended in a body by the local members and visitors from surrounding towns. A service flag, with its gold star among the blue, will be dedicated at the time.
