[Waterloo Courier, Wednesday, May 26, 2010]

WATERLOO — Betty Hansen, 84, of Sunnyvale, Calif., formerly of Waterloo, died May 21, in Sunnyvale. Betty was born April 4, 1926, third daughter of George and Lena Cavanaugh, in an old house out on the prairie east of Blessing. Born into poverty and the Great Depression, it couldn’t dampen her free spirit and love of live.

She married Lloyd Hansen in May 1947 in Grundy Center. He preceded her in death in August 1998.

After graduation from Dike High School in 1943, she worked at Cedar Falls Woolen Mills, the Galloway Co., Waterloo, Potter Meat Locker and radio station KXEL, before moving to California.

She is survived by two sons, Mike Hansen of Oakhurst, Calif., and Pat Hansen of Sunnyvale; and several grandchildren. Also survived by two sisters, Mrs. Vern Niedermann of Reinbeck and Mrs. Marlys Miller of Cedar Falls; and a brother, Kenny Cavanaugh of Waterloo.

Preceded in death by a brother, Don Cavanaugh of Williamsburg, Va., and a sister, Mrs. Margaret Lockhart of Reinbeck.

However, as with all mortals, the time came to meet the Master and as her ashes were strewn over the Pacific Ocean, her family and siblings remember her with never ending love and the trait of her personality that always shone through, "Life is too short to take it seriously."
