LA PORTE CITY - Lee F. "Red" Kearns, 78, of La Porte City, died Friday, May 21, at Covenant Medical Center.

He was born Sept. 25, 1931, in Trenton, Mo., son of Milo Cecil and Agnes Gunn Kearns. He married Evelyn Joyce Scott on Sept. 26, 1954, in La Porte City. She died Nov. 2, 2009.

He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict. He worked at La Porte City Coop, Spahn and Rose Lumber Co., and was a truck driver for Black Hawk County, retiring in 1994. He was a member of the La Porte City Fire Department and tended bar.

Survived by: a son, Howard of La Porte City; four daughters, Vickey (Roger) Jones of Independence, Cindy (Michael) Bruce of La Porte City, Becky (David Burke) Kearns of Mount Auburn and Bonnie Kearns of Independence; five grandchildren, Melissa, Amy Jo, Erik, Josh and Karlee; two great-grandchildren; four stepgreat-grandchildren; two brothers, Kenneth (Judy) of Arizona and Clarence (Shirley) of Oskaloosa; and five sisters, Nadine (Mark) Hogan of Independence, Norma Jean (Wilber) Young of N.C., Loretta (George) Mickens and Diane Lambirth, both of Arizona and Beverly (Dick) Scott of Dysart.

Preceded in death by: his wife; five brothers, Howard, Edward, Richard, Russell and John; and a sister, Mildred Chapman.

Services: 11 a.m. Tuesday at Heartland Community Church, with burial in West View Cemetery, both in La Porte City. Visitation from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at Heartland Community Church and an hour before services Tuesday at the church. Graveside military rites will be conducted by the La Porte City American Legion San Diego Post 207 and V.F.W. Post 3893. La Porte City Funeral Service in charge of arrangements.
