WATERLOO - Bernice L. Smart, 89, of Waterloo, died Friday, May 7, at Ravenwood Nursing and Rehab Center of natural causes.

She was born July 29, 1920, in Quasqueton, daughter of Spencer and Eva Swartzell Swartz. She married Leonard Smart Nov. 27, 1937, in Independence. He died in April, 1965.

She was a clerk in the Black Hawk county treasurer's office from 1966-71, retiring due to health reasons. She was a member of Waterloo First United Methodist Church.

Survived by: a son, William L. (Nancy Hart) of Waterloo; three brothers, Chuck (Ann) Swartz of Chicago Heights, Ill., Carl (Nell) Swartz of Fort Collins, Colo., and Darrell Swartz of Sanborn; and a sister, Georgia Secor of Waterloo.

Preceded in death by: a brother, LeRoy Swartz; and a sister, Beverly Stedman.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Locke Funeral Home, with burial in Waterloo Memorial Park Cemetery. Public visitation from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
