CEDAR FALLS - Eugene "Gene" E. Stokes, 86, of Cedar Falls, died Friday, April 30, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City of a massive stroke.

He was born May 5, 1923, in Orange Township, son of Ralph and Lillian Hillock Stokes. He married Jean Caley; they later separated.

He was a 1941 graduate and valedictorian at Orange High School. Mr. Stokes served with the U.S. Army in the Pacific Theatre of Operations during World War II. He was a farmer in Black Hawk county, a cream hauler, and was a tankman for Mobil Oil.

Survived by: his wife; two daughters, Pam (Joel) Wood and Janice Parsons, both of Janesville; a granddaughter, Sara (Jeff) Smead; three great-grandchildren; a brother, R. Keith (JeanAnn) of Old Frontenac, Minn.; and his special friend, Vi Dyer of Cedar Falls.

Preceded in death by: a son, Edward Allen; a sister, Zelma Latner; a granddaughter, Amy Welter; and a son-in-law, Edward Parsons.

Services: 2 p.m. Monday at Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home, with burial in Cedar Valley Memorial Gardens, both in Cedar Falls. Military honors will be conducted by Cedar Falls AMVETS Post 49. Public visitation from 2 to 5 p.m. today, and an hour before services Monday at the funeral home.
