WATERLOO - Mary Louise Burns, 65, of Waterloo, died Monday, April 12, at St Marys Hospital, Rochester, Minn., after a courageous battle against pancreatic cancer.

She was born May 22, 1944, in Virginia, Minn., the only child of Albert Oscar and Rosina Lydia Dressel Engman.

She retired from the State of Iowa Department of Human Services, where her last position was management analyst.

Mary had many interests including knitting, quilting, travel, jewelry making, bear making and music. She took classes in goldwork embroidery through the Royal School of Needlework based in London, England. She played the organ and piano and was teaching herself to play the Irish lap harp. She and John loved to sing, especially hymns and Irish ballads. But one of her greatest joys was being Nana to her seven grandchildren.

Mary is survived by her beloved husband, John J. Burns; one stepdaughter, Tara (Robert) Lesniak of Delafield, Wis.; and two stepsons, Shawn (Maria) Burns of Paris, France, and Brian (Jennifer) Burns of Johnston. She also is survived by seven grandchildren, Brendan and Collin Lesniak, Sebastian, Nicolas and Augustin Burns and Molly and Laura Dugan; a sister-in-law, Barbara (Alan Stewart) Burns of Ann Arbor, Mich.; five brothers-in-law, James (Nancy) Burns and their children, Andrew and Eric of Marietta, Ga., Timothy (Violy) Burns and their children, Matthew, Mary and Madeleine of Santa Cruz, Calif., Thomas Burns of Macon, Ga., Francis (Roxanne) Burns and their son, Bradley of Mason City, and Burton "Tony" (Gigi) Burns and their children Nicole and Stephanie of Cedar Falls.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and her husband's parents, John Clement and Mary Maxine Moroney Burns.

Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, April 17, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Cedar Falls. Friends may call at Kearns, Huisman-Schumacher Chapel on Kimball from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday and an hour before services Saturday at the church.

Those who wish may direct memorials to the Grout Museum.
