INDEPENDENCE - Violet Goldie Weltzin, 89, of Independence, formerly of Jesup, died Thursday, April 1, at her home following a brief illness.

She was born Sept. 29, 1920, in La Porte City, daughter of William Rudolph Sommerfelt and Goldie Estella Purdy Sommerfelt. She married Louis Carl Weltzin on April 15, 1942, at Zion Lutheran Church Jubilee, rural La Porte City. He died Oct. 11, 1981.

She was a homemaker and a member of the American Lutheran Church in Jesup.

Survived by: two daughters, Arleen (Steve) Block of Waterloo and Sheryl of Independence; two sons, Darrell (Barbara) of DeWitt and Glen (Mary) of Rockbridge, Ohio; 8 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Vernetta Necker of Independence.

Preceded in death by: her husband Louis; a great-grandson, Hunter Blad; a brother, Vernon Sommerfelt; and six sisters, Viola, Violena Riechmann, Valentina Riechmann, Vivian Mumaw, Veda Boelman and Valita Sommerfelt.

Services: 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at Zion Lutheran-Jubilee Cemetery, rural La Porte City. Public visitation from 2 to 3 p.m. Tuesday at White Funeral Home, Independence.
