WATERLOO — Richard Ralph "Rich" Schmitt, 78, of Waterloo, died Monday, March 22, at Sartori Memorial Hospital, Cedar Falls.

He was born Jan. 2, 1932, in Waterloo, son of Ralph William and Dolorosa Faux Schmitt. He married Patricia I. Thein on April 21, 1951, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Waterloo.

Mr. Schmitt was employed with Rath Packing Co. for 38 years, then at Maple Lanes until he retired.

Survived by: his wife; three daughters, Pam (Vern) Klein of Waterloo, Kim of Cedar Falls and Donna (Pat) Gerst of Manteno, Ill.; 10 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Mary (Dale) Edwards of Ames and Donna (John) Maringer of San Diego.

Preceded in death by: a brother, James; and a sister, Betty Murray.

Family directed services: 11 a.m. Friday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, preceded by an hour of visitation. Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway assisted the family.

Memorials: may be directed to the Alzheimer’s Association or the church, in lieu of flowers.

Rich was prolific in many sports, but mostly loved golf and bowling. He was in the Waterloo and Iowa Bowling halls of fame. More than sports, Rich loved his wife of almost 59 years, his three daughters and his grandchildren.
