WATERLOO -- Gilbert Ralph Kent, 71, of Waterloo, died Saturday, April 22, 2000, at Allen Hospital of cancer.

He was born July 30, 1928, in Manchester, son of Bernard C. and Marjorie "Haby" McGonegal Kent. He married Berniece Evelyn Stanford on Aug. 3, 1946.

Mr. Kent was employed by the Illinois Central Gulf Railroad, retiring in 1989. After retirement he worked for a while for Corporate Express. He was past Worshipful Master of Waterloo Lodge 105 and past Worthy Patron of Waterloo Chapter 128 of the Order of Eastern Star. He was awarded the State of Iowa Certificate of Valor in 1946 for saving the lives of two children from drowning in the Cedar River.

Survived by: his wife; two sons, Tom of Huntington Beach, Calif., and Greg of Waterloo; two daughters, Karen Sullivan and Marcia Jacobs, both of Waterloo; 11 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; and a brother, Kenneth of Cedar Falls.

Preceded in death by: a son, Richard; a granddaughter; and four brothers, Robert, Richard, James and Herold.

Services: 2 p.m. Wednesday at Grace Brethren Church, with burial in Garden of Memories. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on Ridgeway Avenue, with a 7 p.m. public Masonic service.
