WATERLOO - Harold L. Shindley, 85, of Waterloo, died Friday, March 12, at Covenant Medical Center of natural causes.

He was born Sept. 16, 1924, in Elmwood, Ill., son of Niles and Mae Mary Miskimen Shindley. He married Muriel Langdale on July 8, 1949, in Waterloo. She died Dec. 17, 2009.

He worked as a clerk for the Illinois Central Railroad for 36 ½ years, retiring in 1984. He served in the 82nd Airborne Division of the U.S. Army at the Battle of the Bulge during World War II.

Survived by: a brother, David, of Chillicothe, Ill.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Preceded in death by: three brothers, William, Eugene and Robert.

Services: 11 a.m. Monday at Kearns, Huisman-Schumacher Chapel on Kimball, with burial in Elmwood Cemetery. Military rites will be conducted by the Becker-Chapman American Legion Post 138 and VFW Post 1623. Public visitation from 9 a.m. until services Monday at the funeral home.

Memorials: may be directed to the American Cancer Society or the Cedar Valley Hospice Home.
