Erling C. Hermanson was born June 21, 1936, in Spring Grove, Minn., the son of Henry T. and Sylvia (Sagdalen) Hermanson. He served in the U.S. Army, entering December 1956, and was honorably discharged in December 1958. Erling was united in marriage to Sally Sherwood on Sept. 5, 1959, in Spring Grove, Minn. He was employed at John Deere, retiring after 35 years of service. Erling loved fishing and camping in Minnesota, which he called "God's Country." He was a NASCAR fan, an excellent bowler and a bird lover - he would feed and watch them. Erling loved to pick on his grandchildren and spend time with all of his family; they were very important to him. He enjoyed spending time with his friends at the VFW, where he has a lifetime member.

Erling passed away on Wednesday, Feb. 17, 2010, at Allen Hospital at the age of 73. He is preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Ronnie at birth; a sister, Jeanette Nelson; a brother-in-law, Robert Sherwood; and a sister-in-law, Mary Jebe.

Erling is survived by his wife, Sally of Waterloo; a son, Curtis (LeeAnn) Hermanson of Spring Grove, Minn.; two daughters, Alisa (Richard) Butts of Sardis, Miss., and Melissa (Gene) Wandro of Waterloo; seven grandchildren, Randy, Ryan, Jordan, Dakota, Haley, Levi and Kelsey; two great-grandchildren, Jasmine and Kacie; a brother, Gary (Diane) Hermanson of Hastings, Minn.; five sisters, Arlene (Kenneth) Westrud of Winona, Minn., Diane (Gary) Peterson of Northfield, Minn., Loretta (Richard) Holland of Minnesota City, Minn., Cheryl (Robert) Burden of Isanti, Minn., and Jean Blagsvedt of Mabel, Minn.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 20, Our Savior's Lutheran Church, with burial at a later date. Public visitation from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Parrott & Wood Chapel of Memories, an Overton Family Service, and for an hour before services Saturday at the church. Military rites will be conducted by Becker-Chapman Post 138 American Legion and Waterloo Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1623.
