RHUM, ANDERSON, KEOPPEL, WINSLOW, ANTHONY

Doris Vivian Rhum, 93, of Cedar Falls, Iowa, died Thursday, Feb. 11, 2010, at the Elizabeth Martin Health Center of Western Home Communities.

She was born Sept. 20, 1916, near Spencer, Iowa, daughter of Irvin and Hazel Anderson. In 1924 the family moved to University Park, suburb of Oskaloosa, Iowa. She earned a B.A. degree from John Fletcher College, Oskaloosa, and took post-graduate courses at the University of Iowa, Iowa City, Iowa. She taught English, speech, and vocal music in Iowa high schools: Crawfordsville, Newburg, Gilman, Aplington and Iowa City Junior High.

She married Gordon J. Rhum on May 29, 1938, at Central Methodist Church, Oskaloosa. In 1948, Cedar Falls became their permanent home. She was a member of GIVS, Sartori Hospital Auxiliary, Y.W.C.A., University Dames, Stonecroft Fellowship, and later Cedar Falls Valley View Baptist Church. She was active for many years at First Baptist Church in Cedar Falls where she taught both children’s and adult Sunday School classes, was director of Vacation Bible School, and led Baptist Youth Fellowship.

She was a former member of the Cedar Falls Woman’s Club Chorus, the Waterloo Metropolitan Chorale, church choirs, and for many years the Cedar Falls Bible Conference soloist for artist Karl Steele’s chalk drawings, “Sermons in Art.” She served as area representative for Christian Women’s Clubs, taught interdenominational home Bible studies, and entertained church and community groups with “Tunes and Tidbits” presentations.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Gordon J. Rhum; her son, Timothy J. Rhum; her parents; and two sisters, Audrey Keoppel and Arlene Winslow.

She is survived by her daughter, Cynthia (Michael) Anthony of Cedar Falls; a granddaughter, Angela Anthony of Cedar Falls; three nephews, Keith Keoppel of Newton, N.J., Steve Winslow of Dayton, Ohio, and Robin Winslow of Kenilworth, Ill.; and a niece, Judy Anderson of Nora Springs, Iowa.

Services will be Wednesday, Feb. 17, at Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 16, at Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home.

Memorials may be directed to the family for donation to the Haggai Institute for Advanced Leadership Training and the Cedar Falls Bible Conference.
