LA PORTE CITY - George J. Spence, 85, of La Porte City, died Tuesday, Feb. 9, at Cedar Valley Hospice Home, Waterloo.

He was born Oct. 8, 1924, in Cainsville, Mo., son of George Early and Nellie Proven Spence. He married Marion Frances Gill on June 25, 1946, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, La Porte City.

Mr. Spence graduated from La Porte City in 1943, then served in the U.S. Navy from 1943-1946 with a tour of duty in the medic corps in Okinawa during World War II. He hauled lime and fertilizer and shelled corn; owned and operated the Office Tap for 18 years; and farmed for 27 years. In retirement, he continued to work for Spence Fertilizer. He also drove a school bus for about five years. He was a member of the La Porte City American Legion San Diego Post 207 and VFW Post 3983, Lions Club, La Porte City Golf Club, Sacred Heart Catholic Church and was a volunteer fireman.

Survived by: his wife; three sons, Gil (Beckie) of Dubuque, Stanton (Cindy) of Mount Auburn and Timothy of Phoenix; three daughters, Becky (Ralph) Schulte of Fort Dodge, Teresa (Richard) Rubendall of Waterloo and Ann Smith of Cedar Rapids; 14 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Winifred Lambert of San Diego.

Preceded in death by: seven siblings; a grandson; and a great-grandson.

Services: 11 a.m. Saturday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, La Porte City. Public visitation from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at the church, where there will be a 7 p.m. Scripture service. Visitation also an hour before services Saturday at the church. Military rites will be conducted by La Porte City American Legion San Diego Post 207 and VFW Post 3983. His casket will be closed. La Porte City Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials: may be directed to Cedar Valley Hospice Home or American Heart Association in lieu of flowers.

George was an avid card player, enjoyed life on the river, boating, fishing and having fun at the cabin. He enjoyed sports and spending time with his family.
